Sicily: Segesta (Oct 2007)

While at Villa del Bosco Agriturismo we took a day trip to nearby Segesta. This is the site of an ancient town with ruins that include a Greek theater and an unfinished temple. The area surrounding these two ruins has not been very developed. Except for the tourist lodge and road leading to both sites, they are otherwise surrounded by the native flora of northwestern Sicily. This can't be said for many other ruins on the island, which unfortunately have suffered greatly from encroaching development and very high tourist traffic. The ancient town is believed to have been founded by the Elymian and Ionian Greek and was the site of numerous historic battles and conflicts. Construction of the temple was started somewhere around 430-420 BC, but was never finished.

The views from the theater are absolutely breathtaking, and look out over the surrounding fields, farms, and north to the Gulf of Castellamare. We could even spot Villa del Bosco from the top of the hill! Haley came down from Rome to stay at the farm for a couple days and came along on this trip, along with some friends and other volunteers from the farm.
